ECB and UK polls to feature on Super Thursday – Rabobank

Piotr Matys, EM FX Strategist at Rabobank, suggests that there is not much scheduled today that could potentially inspire the markets as the main focus this week is on “Super Thursday” which featuring ECB meet and UK polls.

Key Quotes

“We will find out whether

a) the ECB adopts more hawkish/less dovish tone

b) Prime Minister Theresa May’s political gamble pays off and the Conservative party increases its majority in the parliament or actually loses it.  The latest poll showed that the gap between the Conservatives and the Labour narrowed to just 1%.

c) former FBI Director Comey, who will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee, says anything that could be used by Donald Trump’s critics to build a credible case to impeach him (the most harsh opponents would probably argue that Trump’s tweets are sufficient evidence to seek the impeachment). To recall that ahead of potentially momentous Comey’s testimony, President Vladimir Putin once again firmly rejected any accusations that Russia interfered in the US presidential election.”

“Essentially, we brace for a volatile session on Thursday and Friday as at least one of those crucial events could trigger sharp moves in the markets.”
